29.04.2022
We cordially invite you to the event Night of Churches, which will take place on the 10th of June 2022 in the grounds of the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. At the same time, you can see an exhibition of Norwegian art in the church, which will run until 12th of June 2022.
For the second time, the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Bučovice will be opened to the general public as part of the national event Night of Churches. This year, the programme includes an exhibition with an opening ceremony, in which the Norwegian partner of the URVAL OSLO ART project is participating.
The programme will begin at 6 pm with a Holy Mass, followed by a theatre performance for children by Fígl Theatre at 7 pm. At 8 pm, an opening of paintings by Norwegian artist Helena Urvalkova will take place in the church. Afterwards, there will be a space for commentary on the ongoing repairs to the church and at 9 pm a concert performed by Barbara Jirásková - vocals and Anežka Gebauerová - accordion. At 10 pm the whole event will be silenced with a word for good night.
The exhibition will be on view for two more days, on Saturday the 11th of June 2022, 1-5 pm and on Sunday the 12th of June 2022, 11 am-2 pm. The artist will be present at the exhibition every day in the first hour of visiting hours.
Poster with the programme
The motto for this year's Night of the Churches is "In the daytime may the Lord give his grace, all NIGHT I will sing to him and praise him."
The Norwegian artist Helena Urvalková, born in Frýdlant in the Czech Republic, has lived in Norway since she was 15 years old, where she also studied painting and art history at Kunstøyskolen in Oslo. Today, she draws inspiration from her memories of her childhood in her native country and from later trips to the Czech Republic in search of her Czech roots, as well as from the Nordic country that has become her new home.
Helena Urvalkova will exhibit 6 small oil paintings and several abstract watercolours at this year's Night of Churches event. The theme of the exhibition is closely linked to the motto of the Night of Churches event.
The artist is fascinated by the contrast between day and night, how the human soul and our perception changes after sunset. In her work she uses symbols and loosely follows the tradition of surrealism, where she finds inspiration in her role models such as Frida Kahlo, Salvador Dali and Giorgio de Chirico.
The musicians Barbora Jirásková and Anežka Gebauerová are graduates of the Janáček Conservatory in Ostrava.
After graduation, Barbora continued her studies at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague under the guidance of Prof. Jana Jonášová. From HAMU in Prague Barbora went on to the prestigious Conservatorium van Amsterdam in the Netherlands, where she studied with Sasja Hunny. This year she completed her studies at the University of Ostrava. During her studies at the conservatory, Barbora twice received first place in the national conservatory competition in classical singing. She also won first prize in the international competition Pro Bohemia or in the Olomouc Singing Competition. In 2012 she performed in cooperation with the Czech Embassy in Donetsk (UA). She has performed several times with the Janáček Philharmonic Orchestra in Ostrava, but also with the Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra in Olomouc and the Silesian Chamber Orchestra in Katowice. She regularly collaborates as a soloist with contemporary composers and experimenters.
After graduating from the conservatory, Anežka entered the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice, where she studied accordion and jazz composition. She has performed in concerts both as a soloist (e.g. with the Janáček Philharmonic Orchestra as part of the Jeunesse Musicales series or with the Brno Ensemble Opera Diversa) and as part of various chamber groups of different musical genres (Noach, Ostravská banda). She has collaborated with Ostrava musical institutions and theatres (National Moravian-Silesian Theatre, Těšín Theatre, Petr Bezruč Theatre). She has presented the works of contemporary composers, for example, at the Musical Contemporaneity festival or Ostrava Days of New Music.
During the concert in the Bučovice church we will hear compositions and songs by Samuel Barber, Aaron Copland, Gabriel Fauré, Bohuslav Martinů, Leoš Janáček, Goerge Gershwin, Isac Albeniz and others.
The event Night of Churches including the exhibition in the parish of Bučovice is part of the project "Restoration of the organ and revitalization of the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Bučovice" funded by the EEA Grants 2014-2021.
